Sexton Ranch Barn Plein Air Oil Painting by Marcy Brennan

Sexton Ranch Barn Plein Air Painting - 8"x10" oil on canvas panel - $150

We had a large group out to Sexton Ranch in Vero Beach last Wednesday.  After another painter and I circled around the area lost for about half an hour, we found the right turnoff and had a gorgeous morning of painting!  This dilapidated old barn captured everyone's interest, all from different angles. I found a nice shady spot under a hundred year old oak and set up there.

Then lunch afterwards with two painting buddies and some major damage to our bank accounts at Michaels after lunch.  All in all, a successful, fun day.  ;-)

Savanna's Bridge Plein Air Oil Painting by Marcy Brennan

Savanna's Bridge Plein Air Oil Painting - 8"x10" oil on canvas panel $150

I've been wanting to paint this bridge since my plein air group was at the Savannah's Recreation Area last fall and one of the artists was painting it.  I got the chance to paint it this fall.  The bridge itself was a challenge as structures aren't my forte - I'm more of a landscape painter.

And when I went to scan the painting, I noticed I've signed it twice - you know, when one time just won't do.  ;-)  So definitely have to paint over one of them.

Oak Canopy Plein Air Oil Painting by Marcy Brennan

Oak Canopy Plein Air Oil Painting - 8" x 10" oil on canvas panel - $150

I painted this lovely view while sitting in a shady and cool oak hammock at Savannah's Recreation Area in the fall of 2013.  It sat in my "fix me" pile for a year!  I finally had some time last month to sit down and "fix" this one.  It's now "post-worthy."  ;-)

Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes Plein Air Oil Painting by Marcy Brennan

Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes Plein Air Oil Painting - 8"x10" - $150

I've always loved the look of the Cobb's Landing Restaurant (mainly because it's aqua, my favorite color), and I'm a sucker for a tiki roof!  I finally got to paint it during Main Street's plein air paint-out downtown.

My friend, Judith, and I set up across the street from the restaurant the first morning of the paint-out and braved the cold and wind all morning.  You can "see" the wind in the palm trees in front of the restaurant.  It was an unseasonably cool day for April in South Florida, but I'll take the cool over hot and sticky any day!

Bottlebrush & Friend Plein Air Oil Painting by Marcy Brennan

Bottlebrush & Friend Plein Air Oil Painting - 10"x8" oil on canvas panel - $150

This is a plein air (painted on site) landscape painting of a bottlebrush tree at White City Park in Fort Pierce, FL.  There were a few water lilies still blooming in the pond and just a few of the brilliant red bottle brush shaped blossoms left on the tree when our group was there.

Autumn in Florida by Marcy Brennan

Autumn in Florida - 10" x 8" oil on canvas panel - $150

I painted this with my plein air painting group last November. We sat in the shade of a lovely oak hammock at Savannah Recreation Area and painted this scene. There's a small pond in the middle ground that I couldn't actually see from my sitting position.  It was a beautiful day, just perfect for painting outside.

Blue Sky Morning Plein Air Oil Painting of Savannas Recreation Area by Marcy Brennan

Blue Sky Morning Plein Air Oil Painting of Savannas Recreation Area by Marcy Brennan

10"x8" oil on canvas panel - $150

I painted this painting with our plein air group in early October 2014 at the Savannas Recreation Area in Fort Pierce.  I began in the shade for a short time and ended up facing the sun most of the time.  But I must say, painting in the hot sun and fresh air is still more fun than working, even if it's in an air conditioned office!

Just as I was finished, a kayaker showed up.  I got a photo and that's a painting for another day.  ;-)

The Figure of MPS by Marcy Brennan

The Figure of MPS

"The Figure of MPS"
Our Grandson Ryan
20"x16" acrylic on 1.5" deep gallery wrap canvas

This is my reference photo of Grandson Ryan walking his bulldog, Sully, then still a puppy

Our grandson, Ryan, passed away Jul 20th of this year.  He was born with a genetic disease called MPS.  His specific MPS disease was called Hunter Syndrome.  MPS children are all missing a certain enzyme that eliminates dead cells from the body.  Thus the dead cells build up in the body's bones and organs, severely limiting their lifespan.  These children tend to have very similar facial and body features.  Their stature is small (Ryan was 17 years old and was about 4'1" tall), and they have a very limited range of motion in their limbs.  Depending on the severity of the disease, some that are severely affected by the disease have such damage to their brain that they never progress beyond infant cognizance skills.

Ryan was moderately affected, so his cognitive functions were pretty much like any other normal child, except that I think Ryan had to work much harder for his wins.  He consistently made the honor roll at school and was a computer whiz kid.  He loved video games and making YouTube videos about how to play specific video games.  His videos are still out there on YouTube.  Ryan was loved and cherished by our entire huge family and his dad's firemen buddies and their families.  There is something so special about special needs children - they tend to teach us so much and the joy they bring into our lives is immeasurable!  To find out more about this disease, visit the MPS website.

When I came across Black Earth Gallery's call to artists for their upcoming show on the figure called "Go Figure," I knew I had to paint Ryan.  I loved this photo with its high contract of light and shadow and thought it was so sweet - just a boy and his puppy.  Painting this was my way of honoring him and of calling attention to this awful disease that almost no one knows about except for the families and friends of those afflicted with it.  It's so rare, there are only 500 children in all of the US with Hunter Syndrome.

The Go Figure show is a juried show with a deadline of Oct 7th, and I began the painting almost a month ago.  I'm primarily an abstract painter, and Ryan's is the first figure I've ever painted.  I would love to be juried into this show.  I will find out Oct 10th.  The show runs Nov 6 - 28, 2014.  Black Earth Gallery is in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Have you ever heard of MPS or Hunter Syndrome?  Have you ever had contact with any children afflicted with a rare disease?  Do you have a special needs child?

Say Hello to Pretty Boy by Marcy Brennan

Say Hello to Pretty Boy!

Pretty Boy - 20"x10" acrylic on a 1.5" deep gallery wrap canvas - $150

This was a joyful little painting to do of a sandhill crane.  While out plein air painting last winter at the Savannahs Recreation Area in Fort Pierce, I snapped a photo of a sweet family of four sandhill cranes just standing around talking to each other.  I decided to focus in on just one of them for this painting because the shape of the canvas pretty much dictated a solo bird!

I did this painting to submit to the Treasure Coast Bird & Nature Art Show sponsored by the Indian River Cultural Council in Vero Beach coming up in October.  I was in this show last year, and it was such fun to see all the ways artists create birds, whether in painting, glass or sculpture.

This year's Bird Show will be at the Women's Club on 21st Street in Vero Beach.  The dates and times are:

Oct 17 - 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm - Opening Reception
Oct 18 - 8:00 am - 6 pm
Oct 19 - 10:00 am - 4 pm

I met some really nice artists at last year's Bird Show, and I found the Cultural Council staff to be friendly and approachable.

Do you like to attend art shows or do you find it intimidating?  Does it seem like something too "high brow" for you or are you eager to see art in person?

I'd love to hear from you!  Please leave your comments below :-)

New Mini Abstract Series - Malibar

I'm sharing different color palettes that I've painted a large series of mini abstracts in.  These are all acrylic paintings with a heavy high gloss gel medium mixed into the acrylic, painted with only a palette knife (no brushes).  The gloss gel medium gives them a nice sheen.  The edges are all painted in a medium gray color.

Each 6"x6" painting is $25 each and each 8"x8" painting is $35 each.  I also offer some discounts for multiple purchases and prints of each are available as well.  Please visit my website for more info.

There are so many different ways to hang a grouping of these paintings!  You can even hang them on the diagonal for a really different look.  ;-)  I created a Diptic of all nine of the paintings to give you an idea of how cool they all look together.  (Keep in mind the bottom 3 are larger than the top six, but with prints, you can have all nine printed the same size.)

I'd love to hear how you would use these paintings in a grouping.  Also, if you have a particular set of colors you would like painted in my swirly abstract style, I would be happy to create some especially for you.  Just leave me a comment below.

New Mini Abstract Series - Bonita by Marcy Brennan

I have had a blast paintings a number of new series of tiny abstract paintings and will be sharing them with you series by series.  This first series I'm sharing is called Bonita, after Bonita Springs, Florida. Sea Glass II by Marcy Brennan

Sea Glass II - Acrylic on 20" x 16" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $350

This is the second in my sea glass abstract series.
I have a whole bowl of sea glass in my home in these colors.
My earliest memory of color goes back to the age of three when I first
laid eyes on colorful depression glass.
So I've always had a fascination with all types of colorful glass.
Have you collected any sea glass?
What are you favorite colors to collect?

Sea Glass III by Marcy Brennan

Sea Glass III - Acrylic on 12" x 12" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $150

This is the third in my sea glass series and I love the texture and colors in it!
I wanted a bit of tension in this so I added the complement of blue--orange--to the
cool colors of the blues and greens I think of when I think of sea glass.
I looked up which sea glass colors are the rarest or toughest to find,
and orange is on that list.
This series has inspired me to go through my collection of sea glass
and make a pair of earrings and maybe a bracelet!
Have you made any sea glass jewelry for yourself?

Sea Glass I by Marcy Brennan

Sea Glass I - Acrylic on 20" x 16" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $350

One of my very favorite things is sea glass!  I Googled how sea glass is formed, and this is what I found:
  1. "Sea glass is originally made by man (bottles and jars) but refined by nature to become smooth frosty beach found gems. Sea glass begins as bottles & glass that get tossed on the shore, broken, and then tumbled smooth by the waves and currents."

So something made by one person to be something useful, then tossed away by another person as something useless, becomes something to be found by yet another person and kept as a treasure.  The circle of life in a piece of glass ;-)

Serengeti 3 by Marcy Brennan

Serengeti 3 - Acrylic on 16" x 20" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $350

This was such a fun series to paint because the colors are a complete departure from my normally "cool" color palette.  The art association I'm a member of and where I have a gallery studio has a new challenge for local artists each month.

August's theme was the Serengeti of Africa.  This series was created from a sunset photo of the Serengeti plains.  I used hot colors like red, orange and yellow along with black inspired by the trees against the red sky.  I have drips of color going both ways, and that created a texture somewhat like alligator skin.

Serengeti 2 - Acrylic on 16" x 20" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $350

This is the second painting in my Serengeti series.  While painting this, I kept thinking about the movie, "Out of Africa" and how beautiful it is there.

Giverny "Remastered" by Marcy Brennan

Giverny "Remastered" - 18"x12"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas - $150

I started out doing an abstract on this canvas that turned into a rose garden that turned into water lilies!  Talk about transformations ;-)  The theme for Sep 2014 in Art Mundo's underground gallery is "Remastered".  Artists were invited to re-create an old master's work.  Since this painting had already sort of morphed into water lilies, I decided to take a look at one of Monet's water lily paintings for which he was famous.  I then used his color palette for this painting.  I really like the way it turned out.  This photo was taken under flourescent lights with my iphone, so a better one will replace it after the show is over.

If you buy this painting, it will be shipped after Oct 1st.

Postcard from Adam's Ranch #1 - oil on 16" x 20" canvas - framed in plain black wood fram

This painting was done from photos taken from my first artists' day at Adam's Ranch plein air paintout through Art Mundo.  I chose a little different colors than those from life because I wanted to give this painting and the companion one I did a vintage postcard feeling.
